翻译《后汉书》卷二十七 字仲回，是京兆下邽人。汉哀帝、汗平帝时在州郡做官。王莽篡政时期，每次征召都不去。家里积存了很多钱，隐居起来修身养性，乐善好施。每年农忙时就把酒菜用车拉到田间，等着劳作的人来慰劳他们。那些堕落懒惰的人不好意思见王丹，纷纷努力奋进、自我鼓励。于是整个城邑大家都相互效仿，以至变的很富裕。那些轻浮、狡黠、闲游、淫荡、颓废成为忧患的人，就被他们的父兄知道，让他们处罚他。如果有死的人就发给补助，王丹亲自护灵。那些家里死人的，就都等着王丹来办，乡邻们都习惯了。这样做了十几年，这个地方的风化极为和谐，风俗也变得勤奋。王丹本来性情梗直，非常厌恶豪强恶人。当时，和王丹同郡的河南太守陈遵是关西有名的豪杰。他的友人死了亲人，陈遵为他办理丧事，获得的劳务费很多。王丹拿着一匹缣，放在主人面前，说“我这一匹缣，是用机杼织出来的！陈遵听了露出惭愧的神色。自认为很著名，就想和王丹成为好朋友，王丹拒绝不答应。正巧前将军邓禹去关中西征，缺乏军粮，王丹率领宗族献上了200斛，邓禹占领了左冯翔，以有病为理由不料理事务，结果被批准不用回朝。后来被征聘为太子少傅，大司徒候霸想和他交朋友，等到王丹被征用，派遣他的儿子侯昱在路上。
