\ 道可以说出来的，就不是2113那一成不变的永恒之道，说可5261以4102说出来的东西，就不是恒常的，可1653以用名去称谓，就不是恒常的名称。照这样解释，道和名都是指称谓、言说或指称。这是道、名的第一层意思.“道”是可以进行论述和说明的，然而本文所要专门讨论的“道”是“非常道”。“名”是可以进行命名和称呼的无名”可以认为是天地的开始，“有名”可以认为是万物的来源。所以，可以用“常无欲”的方式去观察天地万物的“妙”也就是“小”，可以用“常有欲”的方式去观察天地万物的“徼”也就是“大”。“常无欲”和“常有欲”或者说“小”和“大”其来源相同，但是名称不同。这个来源可以叫做“玄”。然而，“玄”之中还有“玄”，这就是“众妙之门”：所谓“众妙”就是造成天地万物的种种最微小的因素；所谓“门”，是比喻这些种种最微小的因素所必然经过的路径。常无（有）欲意思是之所以经常在没有欲求时来探究它的奥妙，有的时候探究它的倪端。
